A heart for talented orphans

kleine herzen is urgently looking for generous people, companies or associations, who could give to talented Russian orphans the possibility to study. With the amount of EUR 110,- per month until completion of studies (about 4 to 5 years), every one of us can help a talented orphaned child to receive proper education and a chance for a respectable life in his/her home country.

The kleine herzen project to support  the studies of orphaned  children began after our journey to Russia in July 2009. We met a non-profit organization, officially recognized by the region of Pskov, the Russian Childrens’ Foundation (RCF).  RCF program's intention is to support the education of orphans and children from very poor families so that one day they can start working in a professional field and herewith have a chance of a decent life.

The Russian Childrens’ Foundation in Pskov supports financially talented children from the elementary school to their studies at a university if they have been successful enough at school. Currently the state covers the cost of a place at the University, however it does not cover the cost for food, clothes
and studying material. The Russian Children foundation looks after the sponsored children and young adults and provides their sponsors with a detailed report of their development.
In September 2009 kleine herzen decided to support one of these orphaned children. His name is Mihail (Michael). He was born in the suburbs of Pskov in 1990. He is 20 years old and wants to become a civil engineer. He began  his studies in autumn 2009 and these will last 5 years.

Mihail’s story
Mihail is an orphaned child who had a very difficult start in life. He was born on
May 5th 1990 in the region of Pskov. He spent his early childhood on the streets instead of visiting a kindergarten. His father was unemployed and a heavy alcoholic. There were many days without anything to eat. Mihail began to learn at the elementary school. He found joy in learning, unfortunately he soon had to stay at home because his family could not afford  books and educational supply.

At the age of only 9 years Mihail had been taken away from his family and been brought to a state orphanage, not far from his hometown. In 2000 his mother died and he was sent to another orphanage, far from home. At the beginning Mihail found it very difficult to live far from his home, but he soon started to practice sports and found other children who had similar fates. He learned a lot at school, showed a great talent and got exceptionally good marks. He finished the school in 2009 successfully.

At the age of 19, Mihail had to move out from the orphanage. His dream is to become a civil engineer and his goal is to achieve this dream and to study at a University. Russia supports orphaned children in their studies and also provides them with accommodation during their education. However, they do not cover the cost for food, clothes and schooling material.

Besides his studies Mihail would also like to attend computer classes, learn
English and get his driving licence. He has many goals and dreams and kleine herzen is proud to support him to achieve these. Mihail has committed himself to kleine herzen to learn for his studies and to adopt a proper way of life.

We would like to wish Mihail the best success.

Please find below a Thank You letter from Mihail:

“I would like to thank you for supporting my scholarship. Life outside of the orphanage, where I spent 9 years, is very difficult and confusing. I’ve got many problems and worries. It is very good to know, that there are people, who are interested in me and think of me. I am very thankful for this and will do everything not to disappoint their trust.”

Mihail is the only student from his orphanage who became a scholarship last year. It is very difficult at the moment, due to the global economical crisis, to receive support from local organizations.

kleine herzen in cooperation with The Russian Childrens’ Foundation in Pskov
is urgently looking for individuals, companies and associations, who would like
to give other talented orphans a chance to study at a University and develop their talents.
